National Night Out

On the first Tuesday of every August, National Night Out is celebrated nationwide. The
Saint Paul Police Department encourages you and your neighbors to get together on this
date each year to take a stand against crime and drugs in your neighborhood. We feel
that by getting to know your neighbors you are able to help build a stronger community,
help reduce crime, and build a relationship with neighbors that will nurture willingness to
report suspicious activity in our city.

The 22nd annual National Night Out (2005) was the biggest year yet for the city of Saint
Paul. The National Association of Town Watch (NATW) awarded us with the top award
in the nation for a city with the population 100,000 – 299,999 for participation, unique
events, and overall community involvement. It is the first time that Saint Paul ranked #1
and we plan to continue this high rating for years to come with the help of residents who
plan events citywide.

Either plan to have a neighborhood event in the daytime, evening or whenever it fits with
your neighbors! This can include hosting things like sharing a potluck dinner together,
planning games and activities, or as simple as having root beer floats or lemonade
together. Another way to promote safety and crime prevention is to turn your outside
lights on from dusk to dawn on the evening of National Night Out to show your support.
